Leader

Update: Thursday,  February 14, 2019: 11:00am

We’d like to thank our residents, patients, families and staff who have been helping us through the disruption at The Leader and District Integrated Healthcare Facility and for all their efforts and understanding. At this time, all of our residents and patients are safely receiving care temporarily in other facilities close to home or in the homes of their families. We continue to check on residents who have relocated to their families’ homes.

We expect residents will be able to return to the facility toward the end of the month, depending on clean up progress, once we are certain the location can be safely reoccupied and no further disruptions are expected.

We remind you that if you are requiring primary health care services, we have services available in nearby communities such as Eatonia, Maple Creek and Cabri, while The Leader facility remains closed.

Ambulance services are available in Leader. In an emergency, please call 911.

Further to the information provided earlier, we have additional details on the status of the building and the cause of the flooding. Based on our investigation, we believe the cause of the flooding was a sprinkler line break, due to lack of sufficient insulation to protect from the extremely cold temperatures. The break occurred in a ceiling bulkhead in the LTC building causing water to enter the hallway linking the long term care side of the building and the acute care side. The extent of the damages included drywall, base coves, flooring, electrical panels, fire sprinkler system, and some other components in the impacted space.

Update: February 8 – 3:30pm

Further to the information provided earlier today regarding the water line break at the Leader and District Integrated Healthcare Facility, we have been able to again speak with all families impacted and have worked with them to determine short-term accommodations for all residents involved.

This means the residents will be moving to a long-term care facility closer to home. These moves are expected to take place tonight and will ensure that the residents receive the most appropriate care. At this time the facility is expected to stay closed for several days.

Date: February 8 -12:30pm

Please be advised that due to a water line break at the Leader and District Integrated Healthcare Facility, all long term care residents have been transferred to The Cypress Regional Hospital and The Meadows long term care facility in Swift Current until further notice.

Until further notice emergency outpatient and acute care services will not be available in Leader. Primary Health Care Services are also impacted and those affected have been contacted directly.

The decision to evacuate was made to ensure the safety of our residents and staff. Flooding in areas of the facility has resulted in the loss of power.

Families impacted by this disruption have been contacted directly. More information will be shared as it becomes available.
