Community Dietitians/Nutrition

The goal of the Community Nutrition Program is to promote wellness and prevent and manage disease through optimal nutritional health for the residents of the Cypress Health Region.

The Public Health Nutritionist and Community Dietitians work with individuals and communities to improve their nutritional well being, prevent disease, increase access to food and enhance personal control of health.  They are Registered Dietitians:

  • Educated in the science of food and human nutrition.
  • Trained to apply their knowledge of food and nutrition in a range of settings and to build respectful relationships with their clients.
  • Who participate in ongoing professional development to ensure that they provide safe, ethical, and high quality services.

They provide the following services:

Advice on food and nutrition

  • Foods to eat to lower your risk of disease
  • Feeding picky eaters
  • When to take vitamin and mineral supplements
  • How to read food and nutrition labels
  • What to believe in the media and on the internet

Identification of nutrition issues, assessment of nutritional status of individuals, development of  care plans and monitoring effectiveness of dietary changes

  • Healthy eating and weight control
  • Diabetes, heart disease, cancer and other special medical needs
  • Normal nutrition though out the life cycle (infants, preschool, school age, adult and seniors)

Nutrition presentations to groups

  • Chronic disease management and prevention classes
  • Grocery store tours
  • Canadian Mental Health Association
  • Label reading, portion distortion
  • Kids in the Kitchen

Teaching other professionals

  • Professional orientation and in-services (public health nurses, nutrition education workshops for teachers)
  • Consultation and provision of resources to other professionals who use the information with their clients (teachers, coaches, support group leaders)

Promoting, developing and implementing healthy public policy

  • Healthy school food policies
  • Breastfeeding Policy (Cypress Health Region)
  • Cypress Health Region Food Policy

Media work, targeted at entire communities

  • Local media work (i.e. radio, newspaper)
  • Develop nutrition resources  (teaching kits, client handouts)

Participation on community, regional and provincial working groups on a variety of issues

  • Chronic disease management and prevention
  • Breastfeeding support and promotion
  • Food security
