Speech-Language Pathologists work with individuals of all ages who need help with communication or swallowing. Patients may need help because of an illness or accident, a developmental problem, or the aging process.
Adults
There is one Speech Language Pathologist based out of the Cypress Regional Hospital who provides services to the adult population. The primary focus in acute care is to assist individuals with any communication disorders or swallowing dysfunction that occurs with certain injuries or illnesses (for example, a stroke). The goal is to assist individuals to learn how to communicate effectively and/or swallow safely. The Speech Language Pathologist also sees adults with communication or swallowing disorders on an outpatient basis, and does limited consultations in the region’s Home Care program and Long Term Care facilities.
Pediatrics
The pediatric Speech Language Pathologists are based out of the Cypress Regional Hospital. Their main focus is to assist pre-school aged children with voice problems, fluency problems, and in the age-appropriate development of speech-language-communication skills. Speech Language Pathologists also have the knowledge to provide children with limited or no verbal communication skills with the correct alternative or augmentative communication strategies.
Pediatric Health and Development Team
The Pediatric Health and Development Team’s primary focus is to provide a coordinated, focused team approach for identifying and treating developmental concerns in children aged zero to school entry. The goal is provide the services necessary for each child as close to home as possible.
Team members include: Physical Therapist, Physical Therapy Assistant, Speech-Language Pathologists, Speech-Language Pathology Assistant, Early Childhood Psychologist, Social Worker, Autism Spectrum Disorders Consultant, Autism Spectrum Disorders Support Worker, Occupational Therapist, and Registered Dietitian. This team works closely with other health care providers such as Public Health Nurses, Pediatricians, Family Doctors, and specialists in Saskatoon and Regina.
