Public Tours – Long Term Care

Construction of the newest long term care facility in southwest Saskatchewan is moving forward at a tremendous pace and the public are invited to participate in a tour to find out more about what the facility will offer. The Cypress Health Region would like to welcome the public to join them in a one-hour tour during the month of July.

Additional dates have been confirmed for individuals and groups to get an advance look at replica resident and palliative care rooms that will be included in the new Swift Current long term care facility. Morning, afternoon, and evening tour options will be offered on July 9, 16, 23, and 30.

Pre-registration for the tours is required to ensure that our numbers are appropriate and that everyone in the group can see and hear the tour leader. If you are interested in a tour, please call 306.741.1885 or email sc-ltcpublictours@cypressrha.ca. Additional information on the date and time options can be discussed with you to find a tour that will fit into your schedule. As well, you will be provided with information on the location of the tours.

The replica rooms have been constructed to simulate the full size that they will be and include a real life view of the features that the room will have. This includes lighting, bathroom amenities, ceiling mounted lifts, windows that open, paint, flooring, and other furniture/equipment. In addition to touring the two replica rooms, a variety of other information about the project will be available including a brief simulated video that will display what the facility will look like from the inside and outside.

Tours have been provided since the last week of April and there has been very valuable feedback received from those taking the tour. A number of suggestions have been offered that will be incorporated into the ongoing design for the rooms and participants have taken the opportunity to offer their comments on the tour experience. A small sampling of participants’ comments include – the color choices are beautiful and the rooms are clean and organized; I love the bathroom closets that open from both sides to allow staff to stock rooms at night without disturbing the resident’s sleep; it will be easy to move wheel chairs and walkers around, everything is larger in size; love the private rooms with private bathrooms.

Progress on the construction site continues to move forward on a daily basis, with construction crews actively working throughout the site. The public are encouraged to visit the health region’s Swift Current Long Term Care webpage to keep up to date with the status and progress on the project, and to view the on-site construction camera that provides visitors with the ability to zoom in on specific areas of the site.

Public Tours Still Available for Swift Current Long Term Care

Have you booked your tour yet?

The Cypress Health Region is inviting the general public to join them in taking an advance look at the resident and palliative care rooms that will be part of the new Swift Current Long Term Care facility. Tours have been held over the past few months and the reaction and comments from tour participants have been very positive as to the design, overall size, and benefits to resident care.

The health region is encouraging anyone interested in seeing the full size replica rooms and hearing more about the construction project in general to register and come out for the tour.

Upcoming tour dates are scheduled for July 9, 16, 23, and 30 with morning, afternoon, and evening times available.

In conjunction with the project’s construction partner, PCL Construction, the health region has developed two fully functional and completely finished mock-up rooms. One room showcases an exact replica of a standard resident room and another provides a spacious palliative care room. The mock-up rooms offer a real-life view of the features that each room will have and include lighting, bathroom amenities, ceiling mounted lifting assists, windows, paint, flooring, and are completed with furniture and other equipment.

In addition to the information sharing with tour participants, the health region has also gained some valuable feedback from those taking the tour. A number of suggestions have been offered that will be incorporated into the ongoing planning and design for the rooms, which include the addition of a shelf for personal items and the location of the paper roll holders in the washrooms, among others.

Pre-registration for the tours is required to ensure a positive tour experience for all.

Construction Camera Launched for Swift Current Capital Project

Construction of the new Swift Current Long Term Care facility is underway and with the use of a webcam set up on the construction site, you can view the progress being made from the comfort of your home or on-the-go.

The webcam is available on the Cypress Health Region website and can be viewed 24-hours per day by visiting the Swift Current Long Term Care project page and scrolling down to the ‘Construction Camera’ link. The camera takes images every 15 minutes and allows visitors to zoom in on specific areas of the site. A special feature of the webcam provides the opportunity to see the progress from the beginning of the project using a ‘time lapse camera’ feature. Images can also be shared via social media channels with a click of a button.

Another feature of the dedicated webpage that visitors will enjoy is an animation video that was developed by the Plenary Health team. The video provides a video depiction of the conceptual design for the new long term care facility. It includes an a birds-eye view encompassing the entire building and a variety of images that show the main entrance, community centre, 10-bed house, standard resident room, 15-bed house, palliative care room, and many other locations within the facility.

“These two resources were made available on our website so that everyone has the ability to join in the excitement that is building for the new long term care facility,” said Brenda Schwan, Executive Director of Human Resources and Capital Project Lead for the Cypress Health Region. “The animation video offers a sneak peek at the conceptual design of the facility and helps to offer a visual look at the home-like atmosphere that will be emphasized throughout the building.”

Schwan also noted the benefits that the construction site webcam will offer to everyone – to those who live close by the construction site, and those who live farther away and don’t have the ability to stay in touch with the construction progress. “We have utilized a similar webcam with other capital projects within the region and have received numerous notes of appreciation from people who visit the site on a regular basis,” added Schwan. “With the rapid construction timeline that has been set for the project, the webcam will allow everyone to stay up to date with the efforts of our construction partners.”

The Swift Current Long Term Care capital project will consist of 225 long term care beds and will replace the existing three facilities which currently provide long term care services in the community of Swift Current. Anticipated completion of the project is scheduled for late spring of 2016.

Maple Creek Facility Continues to Progress

Construction crews have been busy over the summer months at the site of southwest Saskatchewan’s newest integrated health care facility. Progress is moving forward on the new Southwest Integrated Healthcare Facility with significant steps forward being made both inside and outside the building.

With a project of this size, there are continually a variety of individual projects being worked on at the same time. Efforts by the construction crews are focusing on the sloped metal roofing on the long term care wings, continuation of drywall installation in the kitchen/town hall areas and long term care wings, painting of walls and door frames, and flooring installation in acute/long term care/universal care unit rooms. In addition, ongoing focus is being directed towards the electrical feeds and distribution, work within the mechanical room area, installation of floor heating lines and panels in long term care, exterior parking light standard installation, and installation of doors in the facility.

The overall project timeline has arrived at a point where additional efforts can be placed on the exterior landscaping and parking lot areas. Aside from the rough grading in the landscaped areas, there will be a dedicated group of community individuals who will be playing a significant role in planning what features the interior courtyard will have.

“We are very fortunate to have a local interest group who has volunteered to plan and landscape the interior courtyard of the facility,” said Kim Swanson, Health Services Manager for Maple Creek. “We appreciate the group’s efforts and we already know that the end result is going to be a wonderful spot for our residents, their families, and visitors to enjoy.” The group will be putting their design plans into action in the spring of 2015.

The list of equipment and furnishings for a new integrated health care facility of this size is a massive one, and the procurement of these items was initiated some time ago. Items have been arriving over the past while and will be ready to install when the time arrives.

“The Town of Maple Creek has been a terrific partner through the entire process of moving this facility through the various phases and we have appreciated their ongoing assistance,” commented Trent Regier, Director of Rural Health. “We have been able to store the shipments of equipment and furnishings within the Town’s storage facility and having quick access to them will save a large amount of time and effort when it is ready to install.”

The health region encourages regular visits to their website at www.cypresshealth.ca to view the ongoing progress of the new facility’s construction, and to view the on-site camera feed that provides real-time images (new photo taken every 15 minutes) of the construction site.
